Why did God give us such long memories?
If we were meant to live in the moment, in the future, and not get caught up in the past... is it that we are made as distant reflections of Him? That he has perfect memory, so we have memory as well, albeit imperfect?
I look beyond the empty cross
Forgetting what my life has cost
Wipe away the crimson stains
And dull the nails that still remain
More and more I need you now
I owe you more each passing hour
Worlds Apart by Jars of Clay
He gave us a sense of history that we may look into the past and see his influence the clearer, his love story as it progresses - that we might praise him with all that we have and are. He wanted us to be able to remember his faithfulness to us, the keeping of all his promises. The past serves as proof of God's holiness and righteousness.
33But I will never stop loving him nor fail to keep my promise to him. 34No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said. 35I have sworn an oath to David, and in my holiness I cannot lie: 36His dynasty will go on forever, his kingdom will endure as the sun. 37It will be as eternal as the moon, my faithful witness in the sky!
